Seven people have died in a fire at a hospital intensive care ward in Romania where coronavirus patients were receiving treatment, officials have confirmed.

Irina Popa, the emergency services spokesperson for Romania’s northern Neamt County, said the fire on Saturday affected two rooms housing 16 ICU patients before it was extinguished.

It is understood that the people killed “were infected with Covid-19”, she said.

Popa added that an eighth patient was in a serious condition from the fire and a staff member suffered serious injuries.
